Regulation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Procurement, use, and disposal of radiation producing goods are regulated by the Radiation Safety Act 1975. The Act is administered by a statutory body named the Radiological Council. These goods are regulated:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  • high powered lasers (class 3B and 4)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • x-ray and neutron generators<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • radioactive sources<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • ultraviolet light sources (e.g. transilluminators)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • radio-frequency sources (excluding microwave ovens).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Curtin’s registration under the Radiation Safety Act requires that the Radiological Council be notified of any changes concerning these goods such as acquisition, modification, disposal, or shifting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Regulation of radiation producing goods is like the system used for cars. If you have one:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n
    • it needs to be registered<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • you need a licence to drive it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      Obtaining a licence involves:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        \n
      • attendance at an approved radiation safety course<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • application for a licence (including payment of the fee)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • waiting for the licence to be granted.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        A radiation producing good cannot be used until:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          \n
        • it is registered with the Radiological Council<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • approval for its use is obtained from the Council<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • a Curtin radiation project application covering the device is submitted and approved.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

          These things can take some time to happen. It is therefore a good idea to start making the necessary submissions well in advance of planned use.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
