{"id":3330,"date":"2022-08-09T11:39:28","date_gmt":"2022-08-09T03:39:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/healthandsafety\/home\/risk-assessments\/"},"modified":"2026-09-01T11:09:30","modified_gmt":"2026-09-01T03:09:30","slug":"risk-assessments","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/healthandsafety\/risk-assessments\/","title":{"rendered":"Risk Assessments"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A risk assessment is the systematic process of identifying hazards, assessing the likelihood and consequence of harm, applying controls in line with the Hierarchy of Controls, and reviewing those controls on an ongoing basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A risk assessment must be undertaken prior to the commencement of activities at or on behalf of the university where uncontrolled risks may impact the safety of the activity or participants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A health and safety risk assessment must be completed in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/riskware.riskcloud.net\/user\/dashboard\">RISE<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>When a risk assessment is required:<\/strong><\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Task or activity not attempted before<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A hazard has been identified<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A change in the workplace may introduce or change a hazard<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As part of responding to a workplace incident or near-miss, even if no injury occurred<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New information about a hazard becomes available, or a worker raises a concern<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At regularly scheduled review times (minimum every 3 years)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When legislative or regulatory requirements change<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Following recurring incidents or audit findings indicating a systemic risk<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For more information, select the type of activity you are conducting. <\/p>\n\n\n<section\n                class=\"block cards-image block--no-indent\"\n        data-segment=\"all\">\n\n    \n\n    <div class=\"card-grid\" data-card-size=\"standard\" data-card-count=\"4\" data-card-background=\"white\">\n                    <div id=\"before-conducting-research-or-teaching-activities\" class=\"card card--image\"\n         data-type=\"img\"><div class=\"card__top image-offset\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"card__image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/healthandsafety\/wp-content\/uploads\/laboratorysafetechnique-scaled-aspect-ratio-2-1-480x240.jpeg\" alt=\"Before conducting research or teaching activities\"><\/div><div class=\"card__title\"><h2 class=\"h2\">Before conducting research or teaching activities<\/h2><\/div><div class=\"inner\"><div class=\"card__content\"><p><strong>Who should complete it?<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8211; HDR Students.<br \/>\n&#8211; Research Staff (who control the research methods used).<br \/>\n&#8211; Supervisors of Honours Students.<br \/>\n&#8211; Teaching Staff (who control course content).<\/p><p>You must identify the hazards inherent in your work, document your safety protocols in a written risk assessment, and seek any approvals you need from Curtin or Government regulatory bodies.<\/p><p>1. Identify hazards using a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rig.curtin.edu.au\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Research Initiation Guide (RIG)<\/a><br \/>\n2.
