experiences that ignited an unyielding passion for justice and empowerment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This drive propelled her to academic excellence, becoming the first person in her family to graduate from university and the first Aboriginal person to earn degrees from both Curtin Law School and Curtin Business School<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"861\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/Untitled-design-68.jpg\" alt=\"Emma Garlett at her Curtin Graduation\" class=\"wp-image-13008\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/Untitled-design-68.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/Untitled-design-68-768x551.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sm-font-size\"><em>Emma at her graduation ceremony.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A visionary leader Emma is forging a path of empowerment and driving change through her company Garlett Group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Launched in 2023, Garlett Group is a communications firm focused on amplifying Indigenous voices and promoting Indigenous inclusion in the realms of sustainability and media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIndigenous knowledge and perspectives are integral to creating a better future,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur commitment to Indigenous voices is rooted in profound respect and the invaluable wisdom, accumulated over generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIndigenous communities hold vital insights into sustainable practices, holistic well-being, and storytelling techniques that can guide us toward a more harmonious coexistence with our environment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emma said media was a potent catalyst for change, shaping perceptions and driving transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through the Garlett Group she aims to ensure indigenous voices aren\u2019t just heard in the media &#8211; but celebrated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emma said inspiring the next generation was an important and vital step towards reconciliation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond her firm, Garlett is a prominent voice in national media, leveraging her platform as a columnist for The West Australian and through her YouTube series, &#8216;Paint it Blak&#8217; to foster education and offer authentic Indigenous perspectives on current affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An advocate and ambassador for Indigenous culture and rights Emma is passionate about changing the narrative and fighting for social justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of a handful of Aboriginal people in the mainstream media, Emma uses her online presence to educate others and bring them on a journey of reconciliation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/c\/paintitblakthewest\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1920\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/Paint-it-Blak-Emma-Garlett_Projector-1080x1920px.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12969\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/Paint-it-Blak-Emma-Garlett_Projector-1080x1920px.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/Paint-it-Blak-Emma-Garlett_Projector-1080x1920px-768x1365.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/Paint-it-Blak-Emma-Garlett_Projector-1080x1920px-864x1536.jpg 864w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sm-font-size\"><em>Her online series Paint it Blak provides an Indigenous lens on topical events and issues.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not an easy place to be, but it\u2019s an important place to be,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m committed to nurturing the next generation and inspiring young people to pursue their aspirations and understand the rich history and potential within their communities. One easy way for them to start doing this is by reading books by Indigenous authors. I encourage everyone in our community to do this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a child, Emma remembers the sheer joy she felt flicking through the pages of picture books in the school library at lunchtime \u2013 becoming engrossed in the tales and adventures was her favourite pastime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d like to see more children read Indigenous books from a young age and experience and celebrate Australia\u2019s rich culture and history,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe reality is the way we previously operated is no longer acceptable today.
