{"id":18553,"date":"2022-10-14T15:33:00","date_gmt":"2022-10-14T07:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/?p=18553"},"modified":"2025-07-24T10:42:31","modified_gmt":"2025-07-24T02:42:31","slug":"actors-push-disability-boundaries-in-new-curtin-production","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/actors-push-disability-boundaries-in-new-curtin-production\/","title":{"rendered":"Actors push disability boundaries in new Curtin production"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-sm-font-size\"><em>Australian actress Kate Mulvany.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sm-font-size\"><strong>Author |  Carmelle Wilkinson<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Performing on stage as William Shakespeare\u2019s villainous character Richard III was an experience Australian actress, screenwriter and playwright Kate Mulvany will never forget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The seasoned actress who appears in TV series Hunters and featured in Baz Luhrmann\u2019s Elvis movie, said playing the bloodthirsty, opportunist \u201chunchback\u201d in Bell Shakespeare Company\u2019s Richard 3 in 2017, was both an enlightening and empowering experience. <strong><em><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Curtin Arts graduate, who identifies as disabled herself, said spinal trauma caused by childhood renal cancer saw her spend many years in hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Linked to her father\u2019s exposure to Agent Orange during his service in the Vietnam War, Kate said several rounds of radiotherapy and the removal of her kidney and several ribs had left her with severe scoliosis and chronic back pain from the age of 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTerrible words which we don\u2019t use anymore, such as deformity, malfunctioning and abnormal, were used to describe me,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t aware I could use the word disability growing up, which I think is such a beautiful word. It wasn\u2019t until I played Richard about five years ago, that I really kind of came out and embraced it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;d always talked about my cancer history, but it was the first time I really came out and owned the word disability. I am disabled and I have been since I was conceived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI find it to be a very freeing word and it hasn\u2019t hindered me in anyway since. In fact, it\u2019s helped me. It\u2019s helped me find another community that I didn\u2019t really know I could be a part of.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kate said it was lying there in the oncology ward that she discovered a love for books and storytelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A passion which would later lead her to the stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cI knew from the moment I was on the Hayman Theatre stage at Curtin University, that I was exactly where I wanted to be,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cComing from rural WA we didn\u2019t have much of a theatre presence in Geraldton, but we had deep Indigenous culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI learnt from a young age that storytelling and sharing stories was what I wanted to do, so I decided to study English at Curtin and took a double major in theatre and script writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI remember one day being on stage performing Claudius in Hamlet and suddenly something clicked in. And I realised, this is it. It was one of those incredibly beautiful and rare moments.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the proud patron of the <a href=\"http:\/\/haymantheatre.curtin.edu.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hayman Theatre<\/a>, Kate recently returned to Campus to mentor theatre arts and marketing student Crystal Nguyen who plays the lead in the university\u2019s latest production Teenage Dick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"999\" height=\"798\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/18102022_TeenageDickProduction_999x798.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12347\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/18102022_TeenageDickProduction_999x798.jpg 999w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/18102022_TeenageDickProduction_999x798-768x613.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 999px) 100vw, 999px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sm-font-size\"><em>Kate offers invaluable advice to Teenage Dick cast members.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Staged by Curtin theatre arts students and led by performers and crew living with disability, Teenage Dick is a modernised adaptation of William Shakespeare\u2019s Richard III.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Set in a US high school, it features a young Richard (played by Crystal) who schemes and uses his disability to become Class President.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Directed by disability advocate Dan Graham, the Curtin production offers audience members accessibility options with an AUSLAN-interpreted performance and audio-description support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond their shared love for the stage, Crystal is also a disability advocate, who lives with Brittle Bones Disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"762\" height=\"755\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/Crystal-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/Crystal-1.jpg 762w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/Crystal-1-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 762px) 100vw, 762px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sm-font-size\"><em>Curtin theatre arts student and lead in Teenage Dick production, Crystal Nguyen.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally from Vietnam, the 26-year-old said it had been a tumultuous journey to get to where she is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have a complex relationship with my disability. Definitely when I was younger, say 15 or 16 my view of it was very different. I leaned into what people said about me and I just wanted to fit in,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><em>\u201cNowadays I do whatever I want, and I\u2019m a huge advocate for authentic representation in the arts.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Crystal said working alongside an award-winning actress like Kate was an incredible privilege which was further strengthened by her deep understanding and sympathy for Richard III.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"782\" height=\"587\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/Crystal-and-Kate-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/Crystal-and-Kate-1.jpg 782w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/Crystal-and-Kate-1-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 782px) 100vw, 782px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sm-font-size\"><em>Kate and Crystal on Campus ahead of opening night.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cKate is so down to earth and doesn\u2019t have an ounce of ego about her,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe met at the Basement on Campus, and I realised from the moment we started talking the similarities between our life trajectories. From living with a disability to playing Richard, and our starting points as artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cKate has been a wonderful mentor. At first, I didn\u2019t like Richard and I was having a hard time understanding him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt took many conversations with Kate about his background and historical context to really see him as a real-life person.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crystal describes an emotional moment during rehearsals when she realised, and finally understood his pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was doing the final monologue in front of the entire cast, and I started to cry. By the end of it I was shaking. It must have been quite scary for them to watch and afterwards they asked are you ok? It was all very dramatic,\u2019\u2019 she laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reflecting on the advice Kate gave her, Crystal said the greatest takeaway was accepting that the pressure was on the audience if they relate or like Richard, not hers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was feeling a lot of pressure at that point, and I told Kate I felt like I was almost lecturing the audience on how to view him, and she told me, Crystal, your job is to only present the facts and the story, and it is up to the audience to make up their own minds whether they see him as a villain or not,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd this also rings true with having a disability. It isn\u2019t up to us to make people feel a certain way towards us, I just need to act and be myself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From giving her tips on stage, to encouraging her to dive deeper within the text to understand how Richard came to be this \u2018monster\u2019, Kate said mentoring young artists like Crystal was a fulfilling experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"957\" height=\"752\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/Kate-Mulvaney3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12332\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/Kate-Mulvaney3.jpg 957w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/Kate-Mulvaney3-768x603.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 957px) 100vw, 957px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sm-font-size\"><em>Kate is passionate about supporting young artists and preserving one of the most ancient forms of careers and crafts.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen I was entering the profession, I didn\u2019t have too many mentors, especially those with a disability that were available to me, so I\u2019m very passionate about being there for our young actors to help them navigate the industry, which can be a little tricky at times,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe first thing I tell them is they have a place. As artists, writers, actors, directors, producers, creators, I tell them we are involved in the most ancient of all careers and crafts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><em>\u201cWithout the art of storytelling, and without sitting around the campfire and the sharing of stories and songs, we wouldn&#8217;t have culture. We wouldn&#8217;t have language, and we wouldn&#8217;t learn the lessons of our world.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs artists you\u2019ll often hear things like how are you going to make money? How will you pay your rent? In my opinion those questions should be outlawed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe most important thing I tell them is that their craft has purpose, and they have every right to this career choice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kate said watching Crystal in rehearsals gave her goosebumps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCrystal is incredible. She\u2019s a true professional. I get tingles just thinking about it,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe audience are in for a real treat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Teenage Dick is on at Hayman Theatre until Saturday October 15, 2022.
