Animals are fed well and&nbsp;appreciated for their contribution.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-df-font-size\">\u201cWe ate off the land. Everyone in our village had a small parcel of land that they would grow potatoes, wheat and some fruit trees like apples and apricots. And that was it. Definitely no shopping centres or cafes,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-df-font-size\">\u201cAfghanistan is not a nice place to live, but my hometown is actually really beautiful. It has a river running through it and is quite mountainous with plenty of trees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWhile our village appeared peaceful, there was war around us, and you could hear the rockets and helicopters in the distance.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"974\" height=\"464\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/Jaghori2-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10912\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/Jaghori2-1.jpg 974w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/Jaghori2-1-768x366.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 974px) 100vw, 974px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Jaghori, Afghanistan. (Adobe Stock Images).<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-df-font-size\">With little hope for a bright future, Ezz knew he had to leave Afghanistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-df-font-size is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-intro-font-size\">\u201cIt\u2019s not safe. Danger is always around the corner. Children can\u2019t access education and there is constant fear that someone you love could be hurt,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-df-font-size\">\u201cOne day the Taliban pulled over and brutally killed one of my best friends in his car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-df-font-size\">\u201cMy friend worked for the army and had just been discharged. He was waiting for a helicopter to pick him up and take him home so he could enjoy a break. But there were maintenance problems with the helicopter, so he decided to drive home instead. Which ended tragically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-df-font-size\">\u201cThere is great fear in Afghanistan that you could be killed for anything. For being in the wrong place at the wrong time, for advocating against war, for being a minority group or for just travelling from town to town.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1502\" height=\"1001\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/Ezz-pic2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10909\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/Ezz-pic2.jpg 1502w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/Ezz-pic2-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1502px) 100vw, 1502px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sm-font-size\"><em>Ezz (left) pictured in his hometown of Jaghori with a friend.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-df-font-size\">Ezz said armed conflict and unrest in Afghanistan since the 1970s had claimed many innocent lives and brought great pain and suffering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-df-font-size\">In 2001, US troops moved into Afghanistan after the Taliban government refused to hand over terrorist leader Osama bin Laden in the wake of al-Qaeda\u2019s September 11 attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-df-font-size\">Despite quickly losing control of the country and relocating to southern Afghanistan, war continued to rage, with the Taliban contesting territory and provinces with air strikes and suicide bombings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/Untitled-design-9.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10915\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/Untitled-design-9.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/Untitled-design-9-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/Untitled-design-9-1536x864.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sm-font-size\"><em>Over the past 20 years, 71,000 civilians have lost their lives in the Afghanistan war.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-df-font-size\">After 20 years of conflict, US troops withdrew from Afghanistan in August last year, leaving the Taliban in control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 240,000 lives have been lost over the past two decades from war in Afghanistan, of those 71,000 civilians have been killed in crossfire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the war has also inflicted invisible wounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2009, the Afghan Ministry of Public Health reported that two-thirds of Afghans suffer from mental health problems, and many have lost their lives due to increased disease from lack of clean water, malnutrition, and reduced access to health care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After witnessing the many preventable deaths in his home country, Ezz said he was inspired to study nursing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1637\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/Ezz-pic-min-1-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10910\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/Ezz-pic-min-1-scaled.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/Ezz-pic-min-1-768x614.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/Ezz-pic-min-1-1536x1228.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sm-font-size\"><em>Ezz on his first day at Curtin.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-df-font-size\">\u201cDisease kills so many people in Afghanistan and many of those diseases are preventable with common medicine,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-df-font-size\">\u201cHaving access to health care and common medicine could save so many lives. Influenza and dehydration for instance are quite treatable in Australia, but in Afghanistan you could die from it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong><em>\u201cI wanted to study nursing so I could help those less fortunate access common medicine and avoid unnecessary deaths from treatable infections.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-df-font-size\">Ezz and his siblings arrived in Perth in 2017, after fleeing Afghanistan and spending a short time in Pakistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-df-font-size\">\u201cThe first thing I wanted to do was learn English. So I enrolled in English lessons and focused on that every single day for about two years,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-df-font-size\">\u201cI had done a bit of schooling in Afghanistan but not much. I always had a great desire to go to school and study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-df-font-size\">\u201cWhen I think about my journey and what it took to get here, I am incredibly humbled. But there are many refugees like me achieving far greater than me. We have girls from Afghanistan in Australian parliament and others winning awards and starting their own businesses, and I\u2019m so proud of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-df-font-size\">\u201cI am really blessed to call Australia home and I\u2019m so grateful for my education. Many migrants like me are determined and we just want to work and contribute to society. We want to achieve things in our life, and we want to make a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-df-font-size\">Curtin Senior Lecturer and co-director of the Centre for Human Rights Education <a href=\"https:\/\/staffportal.curtin.edu.au\/staff\/profile\/view\/lisa-hartley-86aba5b6\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lisa Hartley<\/a> is committed to attaining equity in higher education for refugees and asylum seekers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"940\" height=\"788\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/Untitled-design-10.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10914\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/Untitled-design-10.jpg 940w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/Untitled-design-10-768x644.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sm-font-size\"><em>Curtin Senior Lecturer and co-director of the Centre for Human Rights Education Lisa Hartley.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-df-font-size\">\u201cFor many of these people their past challenges and experiences pre arrival to Australia could have been quite devastating,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-df-font-size\">\u201cFleeing your home country and having to navigate and learn a whole new culture can be incredibly daunting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-df-font-size\">\u201cFor many refugee students they may not be tech savvy and English isn\u2019t their first language, so they need to overcome these enormous barriers before even making it into a classroom.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-df-font-size\">Lisa said accessing higher education was critical for many people seeking asylum and went beyond acquiring qualifications and skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-df-font-size\">It was also essential to achieving a meaningful life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong><em>\u201cThe opportunity to undertake study is also seen by many as an important tool for developing the capacities and knowledge to sustain their livelihoods and to contribute to their communities and to society,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-df-font-size\">However, the findings of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsehe.edu.au\/publications\/people-seeking-asylum-in-australia-access-and-support-in-higher-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Australia-wide study led by Curtin<\/a> into access to higher education for people seeking asylum highlighted that most continue to face enormous barriers in doing so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-df-font-size\">\u201cThese barriers are largely due to the restrictive Federal Government policies that are imposed on them,&#8221; Lisa said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-df-font-size\">Curtin is one of the universities leading the way, by offering initiatives, scholarships and vital support to asylum seekers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-df-font-size\">For the past 15 years Curtin&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/support-curtin\/curtin-cares\/2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Humanitarian Scholarship<\/a> has enabled eligible refugees to attain a tertiary degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-df-font-size\">\u201cCurtin was one of the first universities to open a full fee scholarship for these students and it\u2019s an amazing example of leadership in this area,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-df-font-size\">&nbsp;\u201cMany of these students can\u2019t afford textbooks and iPads let alone a degree. So, this financial support is life changing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-df-font-size\">Ezz said attaining a tertiary education at Curtin had in fact changed his life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1140\" height=\"913\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/Ezz4.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10911\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/Ezz4.jpeg 1140w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/Ezz4-768x615.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1140px) 100vw, 1140px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sm-font-size\"><em>Ezz said he wouldn\u2019t be where he is today without his education.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong><em>\u201cEducation is the biggest weapon you can use to fight any war,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-df-font-size\">\u201cAfghanistan wouldn&#8217;t be where it is today if people there had access to education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-df-font-size\">\u201cIn Australia we take education for granted. We send our kids to school without fully realising how privileged we are to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-df-font-size\">Graduating in April this year, Ezz said he looked forward to entering the workforce and becoming an emergency nurse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-df-font-size\">\u201cOnce I\u2019m settled and have a few years\u2019 experience, I\u2019d like to work in developing countries and help them gain access to essential health care,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-df-font-size\"><strong>Ezz\u2019s advice to other refugee students wanting to follow in his footsteps?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-df-font-size\">\u201cDon\u2019t give up hope,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-df-font-size\">\u201cBe patient. Get an education, learn the skills and contribute to your community. Also invest in learning English.
