{"id":18496,"date":"2022-04-05T15:39:00","date_gmt":"2022-04-05T07:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/?p=18496"},"modified":"2025-07-24T12:38:25","modified_gmt":"2025-07-24T04:38:25","slug":"sunrise-swims-give-rise-to-body-positivity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/sunrise-swims-give-rise-to-body-positivity\/","title":{"rendered":"Sunrise swims give rise to body positivity"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-sm-font-size\"><em>Sea gals enjoying an early morning swim at South Beach, Fremantle.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sm-font-size\"><strong>Author | Carmelle Wilkinson<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is still dark outside when Tara Jeisman\u2019s (BA Psychology (Hons) 2022) alarm goes off at 5.16am for a sunrise swim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following through with a resolution to start her day at the crack of dawn, the Curtin graduate and TikTok creator decides to \u201cgo for it\u201d and take a watery plunge at her local beach before the rest of Perth wakes up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A short 12-minute drive from her home, Tara arrives at a deserted Mullaloo Beach where she removes her birkenstocks and makes her way down to the water\u2019s edge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cool sand between her toes is a welcome sensation ahead of a second 40C forecast for that day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking up at the pink sky, Tara\u2019s eyes widened and a feeling of tranquillity and peace wash over her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"827\" height=\"620\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/Tara8.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9786\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/Tara8.jpg 827w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/Tara8-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 827px) 100vw, 827px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sm-font-size\"><em>Founder of Sea Gals Tara Jeisman enjoying the sunset and the serenity of a solo swim.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was absolutely stunning. I actually let out a loud gasp it was just that beautiful,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI previously thought you needed to travel overseas or down south to experience something so breathtaking, but this was in my own backyard, and I couldn\u2019t stop pinching myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>After a refreshing dip, Tara sat on the beach for two hours, soaking in her surrounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"827\" height=\"551\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/Tara5.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9787\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/Tara5.jpg 827w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/Tara5-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 827px) 100vw, 827px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sm-font-size\"><em>Tara says she is overwhelmed by the support and interest in Sea Gals<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What began as an opportunity to seize the day and feed her soul has now become a body positive movement, with over 125 girls ranging from early teens to grandmothers, now following her into the surf each week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"828\" height=\"552\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/Tara2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9788\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/Tara2.jpg 828w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/Tara2-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 828px) 100vw, 828px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sm-font-size\"><em>Sea Gals has grown to over 125 girls, ranging in age from early teens to grandmothers.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 23-year-old founder of Sea Gals said she had no idea her initial post would attract over 156,000 views, with thousands of like-minded girls quickly expressing their support and interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA week earlier my best friend posted on her socials about going to the beach before work, and I thought to myself, wow I\u2019ve always wanted to do that,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI lost a close friend of mine quite suddenly last year and it made me realise how short life can be, so I decided to step outside my comfort zone and just do it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within a few days of posting the video, Tara\u2019s impromptu visit to the beach had gone viral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI had three different Instagram chat groups going with 90 strangers wanting to come with me on my next sunrise swim, it was hilarious,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIn the end only five girls showed up for the second swim, but it was such a great vibe. We spent the next hour chatting about where we were from and our jobs. After the swim I got home, and my Mum asked so how did it go? And I told her I think this is a thing.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat second swim, before Sea Gals was formed, was the start of something special and I could feel it in the air.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The popular sunrise swims have been extended to South Beach Fremantle, Sorrento and Coogee, with girls on the east coast also showing interest in starting Sea Gals in their hometowns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"828\" height=\"552\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/Tara10.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9790\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/Tara10.jpg 828w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/Tara10-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 828px) 100vw, 828px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sm-font-size\"><em>Bridey Eggleton and Zoe Fackerell have joined Tara to run Sea Gals swims across Perth.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI had no idea this would evolve into what it has become. I\u2019ve been overwhelmed by all the incredible feedback,\u2019\u2019 Tara said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI graduated from Curtin in January, and then this happened. Sea Gals has given me purpose and such a great start to the year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tara said the global pandemic had been both socially and physically isolating for so many people and initiatives like Sea Gals were an opportunity to engage in self-care and improve ones mental state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"828\" height=\"552\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/Tara9.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9791\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/Tara9.jpg 828w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/Tara9-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 828px) 100vw, 828px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sm-font-size\"><em>Sea Gals are fighting the isolation and uncertainty the pandemic has caused.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf COVID-19 has taught us anything, it\u2019s that our mental and physical health are so important,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSea Gals is all about creating a safe space where women can be themselves, make new friends and start their day right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWaking up early also allows you to be more productive with your day, and you feel great for it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tara has now started incorporating her psychology degree by kicking off the sessions with mindful moments, where the girls are encouraged to connect with their surrounds and focus on the sounds and smells of the sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the ladies who attend, the early morning swims have become an integral and positive start to their day, with Tara crediting the experience to a greater self-appreciation.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CciVH7GO1kl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"480\" height=\"853\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/Thumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9861\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-sm-font-size\"><em>A recap of Sea Gals&#8217; first summer<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI have women from all walks of life tell me about how Sea Gals gave them motivation, following a low point in their mental wellbeing. And to be honest Sea Gals was the turning point I needed to accept my body,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLike most girls I was always conscious about my body growing up. I\u2019d save clothes in the back of my wardrobe for the day I\u2019d fit into them again and was never entirely comfortable wearing a two-piece bikini.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"827\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/Tara4-827x500.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9792\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sm-font-size\"><em>Tara says the Sea Gals movement has restored her confidence herself and her body.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThen, while editing the footage from our Sea Gals swims each week, I had such a reality check. And I realised everyone is beautiful no matter their shape or size and I am too. I can thank Sea Gals for giving me my confidence back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tara said Sea Gals was a safe space where girls could be themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI usually start the session with an acknowledgment to Country, and then I like to put all my insecurities out on the table and say things like \u2018I haven\u2019t shaved my legs today, my lips are peeling, and I have acne\u2019, so everyone knows straight away this is a place where they can literally roll out of bed and come down. They won\u2019t be judged,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you don\u2019t want to run into the water, you don\u2019t have to. You can walk in or simply sit on the beach and enjoy the sunrise.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given the overnight popularity of the swims, Tara has extended the experience to members of the LGBTQIA+ community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Curtin Associate Professor and Clinical Psychologist <a href=\"https:\/\/staffportal.curtin.edu.au\/staff\/profile\/view\/sarah-egan-2d4adb7c\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sarah Egan<\/a> applauded the Sea Gals movement, saying human connection and exercise were great mood boosters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1706\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/Sarah-Egan.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9793\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/Sarah-Egan.jpg.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/Sarah-Egan.jpg-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/Sarah-Egan.jpg-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/Sarah-Egan.jpg-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sm-font-size\"><em>Curtin Associate Professor and Clinical Psychologist Sarah Egan.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnything that normalises various body shapes and encourages women to appreciate their bodies is a great thing,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>A positive initiative that makes women feel comfortable in their bodies and helps them reconnect with others is so important.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Sarah said the COVID-19 pandemic had hit our young people hard, with loneliness, isolation and uncertainty contributing to unprecedented cases of depression and anxiety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She has also seen a spike in eating disorders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur young people are suffering a lot.
