Over time, alumni came to mean\u00a0<em>pupils<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0<em>nurslings<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Traditionally, the singular forms are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Alumnus<\/strong>\u00a0(male)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Alumna<\/strong>\u00a0(female)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Nowadays, we prefer to use the gender-neutral term\u00a0<strong><em>graduate<\/em><\/strong>, and in more casual settings<span class=\"TextRun SCXW112704025 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW112704025 BCX8\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><strong><em><span class=\"TextRun SCXW112704025 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW112704025 BCX8\">alum<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/strong><span class=\"TextRun SCXW112704025 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW112704025 BCX8\">\u00a0works perfectly too!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>You may also hear the term\u00a0<strong><em>alma mater<\/em><\/strong>, which means\u00a0<em>nourishing mother<\/em>\u00a0and refers to the educational institution a graduate attended.<\/p>\n<p>Examples in action:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Curtin has more than 290,000\u00a0<strong>alumni<\/strong>\u00a0worldwide<\/li>\n<li>As a\u00a0<strong>graduate<\/strong>\u00a0from Curtin, you have access to a wide range of exclusive benefits and resources<\/li>\n<li>John is a proud Curtin\u00a0<strong>graduate<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Jane, Curtin University\u00a0<strong>alum<\/strong>, now works in fashion and design<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>A common misconception:<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Alumni<\/em>\u00a0is\u00a0<strong>plural<\/strong>, so\u00a0<em>\u201cJohn is a proud Curtin alumni\u201d<\/em>\u00a0is incorrect.
