{"id":15758,"date":"2024-09-03T11:48:31","date_gmt":"2023-09-20T02:11:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/?page_id=15758"},"modified":"2024-12-11T09:56:52","modified_gmt":"2024-12-11T01:56:52","slug":"stuttering-clinic-helps-get-word-out-on-speech-disorder-1","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/curtin-commons\/blog-page\/stuttering-clinic-helps-get-word-out-on-speech-disorder-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Stuttering Clinic helps get word out on speech disorder"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-sm-font-size\"><strong>20\/09\/2023 by Carmelle Wilkinson<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"952\" height=\"630\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/09\/Untitled-design-31.jpg\" alt=\"Curtin Stuttering Clinic Kathy Viljoen with parents and children from program.\" class=\"wp-image-15770\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/09\/Untitled-design-31.jpg 952w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/09\/Untitled-design-31-768x508.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 952px) 100vw, 952px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sm-font-size\"><em>Clinical educator at the Curtin Stuttering Clinic Kathy Viljoen, with parents and children from the program.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine you\u2019re at school, running around the playground with your friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You have a great idea for the next game, but just as you put your hand up to get everyone\u2019s attention, you clamp up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The words are on tip of your tongue, but a wave of fear suddenly washes over you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With your heart racing and your palms getting sweatier by the second, you feel a tightening in your throat as you struggle to speak \u2013 silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your friends become agitated and run off, leaving you with feelings of frustration, shame and humiliation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sadly, this is a daily struggle for children like Hamish Quekett with a stutter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Diagnosed at seven, Hamish also lives with autism and ADHD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHamish\u2019s father had a speech impediment growing up and I have ADHD \u2013 so we think his condition was inheritable,\u2019\u2019 said Hamish\u2019s mum Louise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe was also a late talker, and at one point we thought maybe he couldn\u2019t hear us because he rarely responded when we called him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen Hamish did start to talk around three years of age, even though we noticed a slight stutter, we were just so happy he was talking at all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"952\" height=\"630\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/09\/1-2.jpg\" alt=\"Louise and Hamish Quekett\" class=\"wp-image-15761\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/09\/1-2.jpg 952w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/09\/1-2-768x508.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 952px) 100vw, 952px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sm-font-size\"><em>Louise and Hamish Quekett.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite these early warning signs, Louise said it wasn\u2019t until Hamish was in Year 3 that his stutter was diagnosed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHis teachers would often tell me not to worry and that he would grow out of it, and to be honest the stutter wasn\u2019t his biggest challenge so I myself didn\u2019t stress about it,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTalking was a huge chore for Hamish and school became a nightmare for him. It got so bad that he could barely communicate some days.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Louise said Hamish\u2019s stutter affected all areas of his life, but school was where it really took its toll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHis stuttering affected his friendships, and he became a target for bullies because he had problems communicating,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEventually, Hamish just stopped participating in school.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thankfully, a recommendation by a former speech therapist led Louise to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/about\/learning-teaching\/health-sciences\/about\/clinics\/stuttering-clinic\/\">The Curtin University Stuttering Treatment Clinic (CUSTC)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clinical educator Kathy Viljoen manages the clinic, supervising speech pathology students to offer both individual and group treatment to people of all ages for the management of stuttering and fluency disorders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since joining the program, Hamish is a happier 13-year-old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile he still gets nervous and anxious when he talks, for the most part he\u2019s doing so much better socially,\u2019\u2019 Louise said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t talk more highly of the Clinic. It has done wonders for Hamish and more than that he loves going there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery Tuesday when I pick him up, he chats to me in the car, something he very rarely did.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Louise said previous therapy sessions with external speech pathologists proved fruitless and would often result in Hamish walking out on the first session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfter his first session with the CUSTC he told me Mum that was fun. I almost fainted,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t thank the staff enough. They are amazing, they make the time to really talk and listen to the children, and Hamish has even made some friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTheir teachings are so simple yet, so effective and they work on building the child\u2019s confidence and self-esteem too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a very holistic approach which I love.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Julia Robinson said the Clinic had given her son Harvey hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"952\" height=\"630\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/09\/5.jpg\" alt=\"Julia and her son Harvey\" class=\"wp-image-15760\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/09\/5.jpg 952w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/09\/5-768x508.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 952px) 100vw, 952px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sm-font-size\"><em>Julia Robinson said her son Harvey had showed remarkable progress since starting the program.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been amazing for him. They really go above and beyond to help the children thrive,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHarvey loves attending and uses the techniques learned on his own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><strong><em>\u201cHe is quite resilient and doesn\u2019t let his stutter stop him at all. But on a particularly distressing day he will stop mid-sentence and say, \u2018don\u2019t worry\u2019 and gives up.<\/em><\/strong><br><br><strong><em>\u201cThis breaks my heart.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In Australia, stuttering affects more than 1 in 100 and can affect anyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it usually starts in childhood, between the ages of about two and four, when language skills are being developed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Curtin PhD student Rachel Michael said the disorder disrupts the way a person speaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"952\" height=\"630\" stutter might repeat sounds (c-c-can), syllables (da-da-daddy), words (and-and-and) or phrases (I want-I want-I want).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They may also stretch out the sounds in words (caaaaan I go) or make no sound at all (called a \u2018block\u2019) when they try to speak but no sound comes out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to a generous donor who struggled with a stutter throughout her life, Rachel was gifted a scholarship to explore the lack of support for school-aged children who stutter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m so grateful to have met my donor and thanked her personally,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHearing how stuttering had impacted her life, has made my work in this area so much more real and purposeful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe support from the scholarship alleviates financial stress and allows me to focus on my research, rather than seek out additional clinical work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Internationally renowned stuttering expert Associate Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/research.curtin.edu.au\/enable\/research\/dementia\/our-dementia-ageing-team\/janet-beilby-2\/\">Janet Beilby<\/a>, who established the CUSTC, alongside parenting expert Associate Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/staffportal.curtin.edu.au\/staff\/profile\/view\/trevor-mazzucchelli-91ab73a7\/\">Trevor Mazzucchelli<\/a> and researcher and lecturer Dr <a href=\"https:\/\/staffportal.curtin.edu.au\/staff\/profile\/view\/neville-hennessey-8d912083\/\">Neville Hennessey<\/a> comprise Rachel\u2019s supervisory team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her research, titled \u2018Fluency and Psychosocial Sequelae in School-aged Children who Stutter\u2019, will investigate holistic, family-focused treatment options to help support children who stutter \u2013 who are at greater risk of negative peer reactions, rejection and bullying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rachel said having watched a loved one get bullied at school she was all too familiar with the pain and frustration this can bring to the child and their family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><strong><em>\u201cIt saddens me to know that children are being picked on at school for a stutter and through my research I hope to empower these children and provide them the tools to communicate with confidence,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStuttering can involve avoidance of particularly difficult words and phrases, which in turn hinders one\u2019s ability to express themselves freely and restricts participation, particularly socially and vocationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor instance, if someone dreamed of being a teacher, or a lawyer, they may give up that dream to pursue something else that requires little interaction with people due to difficulty speaking and negative responses of those around them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Born in the coastal town of Albany, Rachel spent her childhood years helping on the family\u2019s 22-acre hobby farm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"952\" Albany.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While a country girl at heart, Rachel never gravitated toward Agriculture, instead taking great interest in Science and English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFollowing year 12 I was drawn to Speech Pathology, because it combined these two interests,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t long into my studies at Curtin that I started to get incredibly excited and passionate about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cResearchers have learned a lot about stuttering in recent years, yet there are still so many unknowns to investigate,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><strong><em>\u201cWe don\u2019t have a miracle cure for stuttering, but we do know that early treatment is an integral part of preventing widespread negative impact in adulthood \u2013 which often affects multiple life areas, including work, social communication and interpersonal relationships.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Rachel said a common misconception about stuttering was that it is the result of someone being nervous and shy and was something that would go away on its own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, this isn\u2019t true,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStuttering occurs when there is a difficulty with the brain processes that control speech in the presence of environmental demands and if treated early, we know children have a high chance of recovering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is because there is a greater degree of neuroplasticity when people are young.
