Ayad Alqaragholli is the genius behind the exquisite bronze sculptures you\u2019ve admired around Perth.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re ever enjoyed brunch along Ardross Street in the leafy green suburb of Applecross, you may have noticed the beautiful bronze figures on a nearby resident\u2019s lawn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The owners installed the sculpture to enhance the local streetscape – an artwork they say is a way for them to give back to the community they’ve been a part of for the past 40 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man behind the exquisite sculpture is none other than Curtin Fine Arts Graduate and sculpture extraordinaire Ayad Alqaragholli.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally from Iraq, the Middle Eastern artist moved to Australia in 2005 in search of freedom and a better life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI grew up in South Iraq, and even though it was a beautiful country rich in culture and history, it was run by a dictator and there was no freedom,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His family home was located near a river, and it was here that his fascination and interest in sculptures was born.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was about 10 years old, and I remember walking down to the water\u2019s edge with some red clay in hand and sitting there for hours creating animal and vegetable sculptures,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut as I got older my attention turned to bronze figure sculptures.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ayad said bronze wasn\u2019t the easiest medium to work with, but its beauty surpassed time and history and can never be destroyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ayad’s works have been admired around Australia and the world.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe figure is very important in art history,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe first artists drew figures on the walls of caves and in time they then began to make obelisks. Afterwards they made figures of heroes from their history in the form of sculptures.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Influenced by the rich culture of Samaria in South Iraq, Ayad\u2019s work expresses love, peace and freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt must have left a big impression on me, because from a young age I knew I wanted to create art, much to my Mum\u2019s disappointment,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

\u201cArtists weren\u2019t that popular in Iraq at the time, and I think she was worried I would struggle and wouldn\u2019t be able to make a living out of it,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy Dad is a teacher, and my brother, so I think at first there was some shock that I wasn\u2019t going to follow that career path too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAfter a while, my work started to be recognised and I became a very established artist in the Middle East. I was then able to help my Mum and family out a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ayad exhibited extensively in the Middle East \u2013 particularly in Jordan and Baghdad \u2013 for over twenty years before moving to Perth, with his work held in museums, diplomatic enclaves and corporate and private collections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, Ayad is well known in art circles around Australia and internationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sculptures by the Sea has a special place in<\/em> Ayad Alqaragholli\u2019s heart.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A resident artist of Sculptures by the Sea<\/a>, Ayad has exhibited at the popular outdoor exhibition for the past 13 years \u2013 winning the people\u2019s choice award in 2020 for his sculpture \u2018Anta Omri (You Are All My Life)\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSculptures by the Sea is an opportunity for me to give back to the country that has given me such a good life,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am forever grateful and thankful to the organisers of Sculptures for inviting me to exhibit every year and for the community of Perth for embracing my artwork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI love creating art as it makes Australia more beautiful and I\u2019m so fortunate for the beautiful life I have here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cArtists are encouraged to be themselves and express their creativity and there are endless possibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently working on his latest creation for this year\u2019s Sculptures by the Sea next month, Ayad wasn\u2019t giving much away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hard at work on his next masterpiece.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWeighing about 60kg it\u2019s extremely heavy, but I still carry it around the workshop, it\u2019s my baby,\u2019\u2019 he laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe piece itself is an expression of love between two people and the commitment they make to each other following an engagement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overjoyed to exhibit his work to the public again following disruptions during Covid, Ayad was also looking forward to getting back to participating in international exhibitions in Japan and South Korea later this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s amazing to travel again and be able to share my art with the world. Covid was incredibly tough,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy hope is that my art brings people joy and happiness and lasts a lifetime.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
