They also have importance, and use, in guiding the decisions and actions of government agencies and companies. Using human rights standards in engaging with these parties is, however, neither clear nor easy. This panel will discuss practical methods of using human rights standards to inform the work of companies and government agencies. This can assist external advocates or internal actors. With perspectives and experience from government, academia, practice and media \u2013 the presentation and discussion will be followed by a Q &amp; A with the audience.<\/p>\n<p>Panellists include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Jo Feldman, Partner, Norton Rose Fulbright Australia<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Claire MacMillan, Legal Counsel, Wesfarmers<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Gary Smith, General Manager of Legal, Litigation, Wesfarmers<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">John Southalan, Barrister, Adjunct Professor, Curtin Law School<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Sarah Tailier, Lecturer, Curtin&#8217;s School of Media, Creative Arts and Social Inquiry<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n            <\/div>\n<\/div>                    <div class=\"accordion\">\n    <button class=\"accordion__heading accordion__toggle\" aria-controls=\"technological-challenges-to-the-human-right-of-privacy\" aria-expanded=\"false\">Technological challenges to the human right of privacy<span class=\"ico ico-chevron-fat ico--deep-blue\"><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewBox=\"0 0 32 32\"><path d=\"M10.91 30.41l-2.82-2.82L19.67 16 8.09 4.41l2.82-2.82L25.33 16 10.91 30.41z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><\/button>\n    <div class=\"accordion__content content\" id=\"technological-challenges-to-the-human-right-of-privacy\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>Curtin Law School lecturer Tomas Fitzgerald discusses what an effective response to the challenges of privacy looks like.<\/p>\n\n            <\/div>\n<\/div>                    <div class=\"accordion\">\n    <button class=\"accordion__heading accordion__toggle\" aria-controls=\"closing-speaker-his-honour-judge-denis-reynolds\" aria-expanded=\"false\">Closing Speaker &#8211; His Honour Judge Denis Reynolds <span class=\"ico ico-chevron-fat ico--deep-blue\"><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewBox=\"0 0 32 32\"><path d=\"M10.91 30.41l-2.82-2.82L19.67 16 8.09 4.41l2.82-2.82L25.33 16 10.91 30.41z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><\/button>\n    <div class=\"accordion__content content\" id=\"closing-speaker-his-honour-judge-denis-reynolds\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>Judge Reynolds was a Magistrate from 1984-1997, a Commissioner of the District Court of WA from 1997-2004, and a Judge of the District Court of WA from 2004-2018, including being the Senior Judge from 2016-2018.<\/p>\n<p>He was one of the longest serving judicial officers in Australia and the longest serving President of the Children\u2019s Court of Western Australia \u2013 a position he held from\u00a02004 until his retirement in 2018. As Head of Jurisdiction, Judge Reynolds provided strong support to the Drug Court in the Perth Children\u2019s Court, with the aim of rehabilitating children and young people from the effects of drug use and supporting them to develop stronger relationships with their families and the community. Through his dedication to addressing the high rate of incarceration among Aboriginal young people,\u00a0Judge Reynolds\u00a0garnered enormous respect among Aboriginal leaders addressing dysfunction within sections of the Aboriginal community.<\/p>\n<p>Strengthening the capacity of communities and involving Aboriginal leaders and community members in developing local solutions for local issues has been a key theme in his advocacy on youth justice issues.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Reynolds was recognized as the WA Citizen of the year &#8211; Community Category in 2012.<\/p>\n\n
