FIRST Robotics Competition

FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) is a summer robot-building program for students interested in a mechatronics future. It is part of the international For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST®) movement. Students build a working robot under the supervision of Curtin students and staff. These teams can them go on to compete against teams across WA or even Australia.

What is it?

The FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC) is an awe-inspiring STEM Outreach project which combines the excitement of sport with the rigours of science and technology.

Under strict rules, limited resources, and time limits, teams of students are challenged to raise funds, design a team “brand”, hone teamwork skills, and build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team.

In the process of constructing the robot along with the other tasks performed throughout the FIRST® Robotics Competition team, students learn valuable life skills such as teamwork, collaboration, public speaking, technical science and engineering skills, Gracious Professionalism®, and more.

What does it involve?

Students aged from 13 to 17 years of age first register to participate in the FRC Pre-season training at Curtin. FRC Pre-season training runs for 8 days in September/November and costs $220. It is designed to teach students a variety of applicable skills in Mechanical, CAD (Computer-Aided Design), Programming and Media through working in small groups on a variety of different projects.

If the student has enjoyed the pre-season and wants to continue to the real thing, they then make a commitment to the upcoming Build Season. The Build Season runs for 6.5 weeks through early January to late February and costs $360. There is no requirement to continue on to the Build Season after completing the pre-season, however, all students wishing to complete the Build Season must first complete the pre-season.

In late February, students participate in a “Launch Evening” – a VIP event where the robot in unveiled to family, friends and sponsors.

Teams will have the opportunity to travel to Wollongong for an Asia Pacific Competition on 10 – 12 March and a WA Competition will be held in August 2023.
