Dr Vicky Barnett, Senior Lecturer in the School of Molecular and Life Sciences at Curtin University, shares how she redesigned the final exam for Introduction to Chemistry, a bridging unit for students without ATAR Chemistry, around flexibility and inclusivity. By shifting to an online, invigilated format with a two-week sitting window, Vicky has removed scheduling barriers while maintaining academic rigour, resulting in zero deferred assessments last semester.

View Full Case Study

This assessment invites students to create a short, recorded presentation in the form of a smartphone optimised video essay. By engaging with contemporary storytelling formats and integrating audiovisual elements, students develop confidence, creativity, and professional communication skills. The task empowers learners to experiment while building foundational journalism capabilities, preparing them for a rapidly evolving media landscape where credibility, clarity, and adaptability are essential.

Professor Max Massi from Curtin’s School of Molecular and Life Sciences shares his innovative laboratory assessment that replaces the traditional one-time submission of a lab report with a more flexible, industry-aligned approach. The assessment is conducted using Microsoft Excel data pages, providing students with scaffolded guidance on report preparation before the experiment begins. Students can work individually or in groups to prepare an initial draft, which is submitted for detailed feedback from the teaching team. This feedback is then used to prepare and submit a refined, final version of the report. This process empowers students with choice in collaboration and location, while preparing them for professional scientific practice through realistic data manipulation and peer review.

This Graphic Novel assessment challenges student groups to produce compelling AI-generated imagery that drives their training manual content. Students select appropriate GenAI tools, craft effective prompts, and create visual narratives around specific human resource development themes. Assessment focuses on content knowledge, storytelling ability, and research integration rather than visual quality, ensuring equity regardless of tool access while developing digital literacy skills.

AI-powered patient simulators transform physiotherapy education by providing accessible, flexible practice opportunities through interactive verbal role-play scenarios. This assessment model combines artificial intelligence avatars with traditional clinical training, allowing students to develop essential communication and clinical reasoning skills through consistent patient interactions available 24/7. By integrating immediate AI feedback with academic supervision when used in the class setting, this approach offers cost-effective skill development that complements face-to-face patient interaction opportunities in clinical education.

Critical AI Comparison Reports are intended to serve as mechanisms for students to consider how AI tools perform in comparison human-led outputs. The goal in this is for students to develop evaluative judgement in the context of AI and hone their own responsible approach to AI for their future professional practice.
