{"id":2495,"date":"2017-09-12T08:31:47","date_gmt":"2017-09-12T00:31:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/archives\/50years\/?p=2495"},"modified":"2017-09-22T11:04:05","modified_gmt":"2017-09-22T03:04:05","slug":"stories-curtin-across-decades","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/archives\/50years\/stories-curtin-across-decades\/","title":{"rendered":"Stories of Curtin from across the decades"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As part of Curtin\u2019s 50 Years of Innovation, the John Curtin Gallery is presenting <em>50 Years: Our Stories<\/em>, a collection of stories told using Curtin\u2019s unique archive of documents, images and objects.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition explores Curtin\u2019s past five decades of development from early days as the WA Institute of Technology (WAIT) to the University it has become today.\u00a0 Each story, though different, highlights Curtin\u2019s passion for innovation, inclusivity and collaborative approach to education.<\/p>\n<p>On the genesis of the exhibition, University Archivist Elizabeth McKenzie, said, \u201cThe idea came from wanting to share the\u00a0untold\u00a0stories about WAIT and Curtin,\u00a0how certain things came about (the WAIT symbol for example), and why the campus was originally designed and laid out the way it was.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe <em>50 Years: Our Stories<\/em> exhibition has been very well received by staff, students and the broader community who visit the Gallery,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hope we have cast a small light on how staff and students, both now and back when we were WAIT, have embraced the opportunity to be different, to be part of the community, [and] to excel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The initial display opened in August and featured four stories showcasing WAIT and Curtin\u2019s innovative approach to technology, design, sport and\u00a0architecture.\u00a0 Curtin hopes to add new stories before the exhibition closes later in the year.<\/p>\n<p>Visitors to the Gallery have been very enthusiastic about the trip down memory lane. \u00a0Postcards featuring images from each of the exhibition\u2019s stories are available for visitors to take as souvenirs.\u00a0 There is even a postcard targeted at Curtin graduates asking them to suggest 50 things students should do before they graduate.<\/p>\n<p>If you have suggestions for future stories, please contact the University Archivist, Elizabeth McKenzie, on 9266 1063 or email <a href=\"mailto:elizabeth.mckenzie@curtin.edu.au\">elizabeth.mckenzie@curtin.edu.au<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The University thanks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unisuper.com.au\/\">UniSuper<\/a> for their generous support of this exhibition.<\/p>\n<p>Story by\u00a0Kyrstie Rankine<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As part of Curtin\u2019s 50 Years of Innovation, the John Curtin Gallery is presenting 50 Years: Our Stories, a collection of stories told using Curtin\u2019s unique archive of documents, images and objects.
