{"id":41777,"date":"2026-10-05T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-10-05T01:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/about\/?page_id=41777"},"modified":"2026-10-12T12:49:33","modified_gmt":"2026-10-12T04:49:33","slug":"election-of-one-postgraduate-student-to-the-university-council-3","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/about\/governance\/secretariat\/elections\/call-for-nominations\/election-of-one-postgraduate-student-to-the-university-council-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Election of one postgraduate student to the University Council"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Call for nominations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This is a call for nominations for the election of one postgraduate student to the Council of Curtin University.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Council is the University\u2019s governing body, established under the <em>Curtin University Act 1966 <\/em>(\u201cthe Act\u201d)<em>. <\/em>Council is responsible for the overall governance and effective management of the University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Section 9(1)(d)(i) of the Act provides that the membership of Council includes <em>\u201c2 persons who are enrolled students \u2013 one of whom is an undergraduate student and who is elected by the undergraduate students in the manner prescribed by Statute\u201d<\/em>. Student Council members hold office for a period of one year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The term of office of the current student elected to Council expires on 31 December 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The term of office for the newly elected postgraduate student to Council will be from 1 January 2027 to 31 December 2027.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Postgraduate students considering nominating for election are encouraged to read the University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2026\/09\/Corporate_Governance_Statement.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Corporate Governance Statement<\/a> before nominating. Other relevant governance documents can be found on the <a href=\"https:\/\/secretariat.curtin.edu.au\/resources\/governance.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Secretariat<\/a> webpage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elected student members are expected to bring a student perspective to the Council. All Council members are required to act in the best interests of the University at all times.<\/p>\n\n\n<mimas-block \n        block-name=\"accordion\"\n        role=\"complementary\"\n        aria-label=\"Accordion content\"\n        data-segment=\"all\">\n\n                \n\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Eligibility\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Eligibility\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Eligibility\">Eligibility<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Eligibility\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p><strong><u>Students eligible for election:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All enrolled postgraduate students of the University are eligible for election to Council in this election.<\/p>\n<p>Under section 9A(3) of the Act, an elected student <em>\u201cmay be re-elected once, but only once, on the expiry of their term of office, if they continue to be qualified under section 9.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Students eligible to nominate a candidate:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An enrolled postgraduate student of the University may nominate themselves, or nominate another enrolled postgraduate student to be a candidate for this election.<\/p>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Nominations\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Nominations\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Nominations\">Nominations<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Nominations\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>The nominations period commences at <strong>9:00am, Tuesday 6 October 2026<\/strong>. Nominations are to be made using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2026\/09\/Nomination-Form_PG_Student-to-Council_-2026-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nomination form<\/a>. The nomination form must be completed, signed and dated by both the nominee and nominator, and returned to the Secretariat by <strong>email<\/strong> (scan and send to: <a href=\"mailto:secretariat@curtin.edu.au\">secretariat@curtin.edu.au<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>All completed nomination forms must be returned to the Secretariat by 2:00pm, Tuesday 20 October 2026. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nomination forms received after this time will not be accepted.<\/p>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Candidate-statements-and\/or-photographs\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Candidate-statements-and\/or-photographs\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Candidate-statements-and\/or-photographs\">Candidate statements and\/or photographs<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Candidate-statements-and\/or-photographs\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>A candidate can provide a profile statement for circulation with the voting ballot. The profile statement, to be received before the close of nominations, must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">be in the English language and not exceed 150 words in length<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">be confined to a description of the candidate and of the candidate\u2019s qualifications, skills and experience relevant to the Council<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">not contain information that is false, misleading or defamatory<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">include the candidate\u2019s full name (in the form in which they have asked for it to be included on the ballot form), contact details (for example, student email address) and student ID.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The candidate may also provide a recent passport-sized photograph of their head or head and shoulders.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Candidate statements and photographs must be returned to the Secretariat by the closing date for nominations at 2:00pm, Tuesday 20 October 2026<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Candidate statements and photographs received after this time will not be accepted.<\/p>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Election-process\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Election-process\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Election-process\">Election process<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Election-process\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <ul>\n<li>If only one valid nomination is received, that candidate will be elected unopposed<\/li>\n<li>If more than one valid nomination is received, an election will be conducted to fill the position<\/li>\n<li>The election will be conducted by Curtin\u2019s electronic voting system <em>Simply Voting<\/em><\/li>\n<li>The system of voting will be <em>Optional Preferential<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Voting is not compulsory.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Election-schedule\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Election-schedule\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Election-schedule\">Election schedule<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Election-schedule\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <ul>\n<li>If an election is required, the Returning Officer will publish a Notice of Election on <strong>Friday 23 October 2026<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>On the same day the Notice of Election is published, all postgraduate students will be emailed a link to a ballot webpage where candidate profiles, instructions relating to the voting process and information on the counting of votes will be available<\/li>\n<li>A second email will be sent from <em>Simply Voting<\/em> on <strong>Thursday 29 October 2026 <\/strong>to those eligible to vote, containing information on how to vote on the <em>Simply Voting <\/em>website, including a link to vote and a username and password. This email will be sent to Curtin student email addresses<\/li>\n<li>Those eligible to vote will be able to use this link to vote from receipt of the <em>Simply <\/em>Voting email on <strong>Thursday 29 October 2026 <\/strong>until the close of the voting period<\/li>\n<li>The voting period will close at <strong>5:00pm, Thursday 12 November 2026<\/strong>. After this time, it will no longer be possible to vote in this election.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Counting-of-votes-and-announcement-of-election-result\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Counting-of-votes-and-announcement-of-election-result\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Counting-of-votes-and-announcement-of-election-result\">Counting of votes and announcement of election result<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Counting-of-votes-and-announcement-of-election-result\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>Votes will be counted as soon as practicable after the voting period ends.<\/p>\n<p>The candidate who receives the highest number of votes, following the distribution of preferences, will be declared elected to the Council.<\/p>\n<p>The result of the election will be declared by the Returning Officer on <strong>Monday 16 November 2026<\/strong>\u00a0and all candidates will be notified of the election result in writing.<\/p>\n\n        \n
