The Academic Board is a committee of the University Council and is responsible to the University Council for helping to ensure that the academic quality, integrity and standards of the University\u2019s operations as an academic institution align with the Higher Education Standards Framework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Board exercises leadership and has a major role in promoting and communicating academic values, standards, and quality enhancement throughout the University. It has three main functions and responsibilities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>providing advice on academic matters to the Council, Vice-Chancellor and other members of the University senior executive on academic matters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>approving relevant policies relating to academic matters, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>monitoring the performance, quality and standards of the University\u2019s academic activities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Elected academic members of staff are a vital part of Academic Board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rule 3.1(1)(l) of the <a href=\"https:\/\/staffportal.curtin.edu.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Academic-Board-Consittution-Rules-2026.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Academic Board Constitution<\/a> provides for the membership of the Academic Board to include, \u201cone member of the academic staff of the University that identifies as Aboriginal and\/or Torres Strait Islander, elected by the continuing or fixed-term academic staff of the University who identify as Aboriginal and\/or Torres Strait Islander.\u201d A deputy to the member may also be elected under Rule 3.3(4).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key governance documents include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Statute No. 21 \u2013 Academic Board<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Academic Board Constitution<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<mimas-block \n        block-name=\"accordion\"\n        role=\"complementary\"\n        aria-label=\"Accordion content\"\n        data-segment=\"all\">\n\n                \n\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title--Terms-of-office\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"-Terms-of-office\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title--Terms-of-office\"> Terms of office<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"-Terms-of-office\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>The term of office for the elected member to the Academic Board, and their deputy, will commence on 1 April 2026 and conclude on 31 March 2028.<\/p>\n<p>Individuals considering nominating for election are encouraged to read the <a href=\"https:\/\/secretariat.curtin.edu.au\/local\/docs\/Corporate_Governance_Statement.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University\u2019s Corporate Governance Statement<\/a> before nominating. The Statement and several other key governance documents can be found on the <a href=\"https:\/\/staffportal.curtin.edu.au\/services\/legal-services\/governance-documents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Secretariat webpage<\/a> in the Staff Portal. The <a href=\"https:\/\/staffportal.curtin.edu.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Meeting-Schedule-2026-v14.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">meeting schedule<\/a> sets out dates of Academic Board meetings for 2026.<\/p>\n<p>All members, whether appointed or elected, are required to act at all times in the best interests of the University.<\/p>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Persons-eligible-for-election\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Persons-eligible-for-election\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Persons-eligible-for-election\">Persons eligible for election<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Persons-eligible-for-election\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>All Aboriginal and\/or Torres Strait Islander continuing or fixed-term members of academic staff are eligible for election to the Academic Board. However, no member shall serve for more than 3 successive terms (pursuant to Rule 3.4(4)(b) of the Academic Board Constitution).<\/p>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Persons-eligible-to-nominate-a-candidate\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Persons-eligible-to-nominate-a-candidate\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Persons-eligible-to-nominate-a-candidate\">Persons eligible to nominate a candidate<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Persons-eligible-to-nominate-a-candidate\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>All Aboriginal and\/or Torres Strait Islander continuing or fixed-term members of academic staff may nominate themselves, or another Aboriginal and\/or Torres Strait Islander continuing or fixed-term member of academic staff to be a candidate for this election.<\/p>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Nomination-form,-supporting-candidate-statements-and-photograph\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Nomination-form,-supporting-candidate-statements-and-photograph\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Nomination-form,-supporting-candidate-statements-and-photograph\">Nomination form, supporting candidate statements and photograph<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Nomination-form,-supporting-candidate-statements-and-photograph\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>Nominations are to be made using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2026\/05\/Nomination-Form-Aboriginal-or-Torres-Strait-Islander-Member-of-Academic-Staff-to-AB-Final-20260525.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nomination form<\/a>, which must be completed, signed and dated by both the nominator and nominee.<\/p>\n<p>Candidates may submit a short statement (maximum 150 words) outlining their experience, skills and perspectives relevant to the role on Academic Board. A recent passport-style photograph may also be provided. Statements must be factual, respectful and suitable for publication. The Returning Officer may reject statements exceeding the word limit and adjust photographs to ensure consistency of voting materials across candidates.<\/p>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Deadline-for-submission-of-nominations\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Deadline-for-submission-of-nominations\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Deadline-for-submission-of-nominations\">Deadline for submission of nominations<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Deadline-for-submission-of-nominations\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>Completed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2026\/05\/Nomination-Form-Aboriginal-or-Torres-Strait-Islander-Member-of-Academic-Staff-to-AB-Final-20260525.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nomination forms<\/a>, candidate statements and photographs are to be received by the Secretariat via email (scan and send to <a href=\"mailto:secretariat@curtin.edu.au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">secretariat@curtin.edu.au<\/a>) by<strong> 5.00 pm Friday 12 June 2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Submissions received outside this period will not be accepted.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Election-process\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Election-process\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Election-process\">Election process<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Election-process\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">If only one valid nomination is received, that staff member shall be declared elected unopposed;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">If two or more valid nominations are received, an election will be conducted to fill the positions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">The election will be conducted using Curtin University\u2019s electronic voting system \u2018<strong>Simply Voting<\/strong>\u2019.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">The system of voting will be <em>Optional Preferential<\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">The candidate who receives the highest number of votes following the distribution of preferences will be declared elected to the Academic Board for a term of office concluding on the 31 March 2028.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">The candidate who receives the second highest number of votes following the distribution of preferences will be declared elected as the Deputy to the Member for a term of office concluding on the 31 March 2028.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Election-schedule\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Election-schedule\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Election-schedule\">Election schedule<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Election-schedule\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>If an election is required, all continuing and fixed-term academic staff eligible to vote will be notified by email (Notice of Election) on <strong>Wednesday 17 June 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>An ballot webpage will be prepared and will incorporate the candidate statements and photographs (where provided).<\/p>\n<p>Aboriginal and\/or Torres Strait Islander staff eligible to vote will be sent an email from Simply Voting on <strong>Tuesday 23 June 2026<\/strong> with details on how to access the Simply Voting site. Eligibility is verified in confidence by the Diversity, Inclusion &amp; Belonging team within People and Culture, in line with <a href=\"https:\/\/staffportal.curtin.edu.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Aboriginal-and-Torres-Strait-Islander-Identity-at-Curtin.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Identity Guidelines<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The link can be used to vote from receipt on <strong>Tuesday 23 June 2026<\/strong> until the close of the voting period.<\/p>\n<p>The voting period will end at <strong>5.00pm Monday 6 July 2026<\/strong>.
