It is fundamental to Curtin\u2019s expectations of its community members.&nbsp;Curtin\u2019s values align with Universities Australia (2017) definition: \u2018Academic integrity means acting with the values of honesty, trust, fairness, respect, and responsibility in learning, teaching and research\u2019.\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"> Why it matters <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We expect every one of our community members to act with honesty and uphold\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/about\/vision-mission-values\/curtin-values\/\">Curtin values<\/a>\u00a0to support the academic and professional standing of the University. Curtin actively promotes academic integrity competence as a priority, and takes an educative approach to skill development for both students and staff. We provide academic integrity-related policies, resources and support for community members to achieve this.<\/p>\n\n\n<mimas-block \n        block-name=\"accordion\"\n        role=\"complementary\"\n        aria-label=\"Accordion content\"\n        data-segment=\"all\">\n\n                \n\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Statues,-rules-and-procedures\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Statues,-rules-and-procedures\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Statues,-rules-and-procedures\">Statues, rules and procedures<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Statues,-rules-and-procedures\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>The Curtin University Council defines\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/about\/governance\/enabling-legislation\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Statute No. 10 \u2013 Student Discipline and the associated misconduct rules<\/a> (Academic Misconduct, General Misconduct, and Academic Record Fraud Rules) to follow in a situation where a student\u2019s conduct breaches expected standards of behaviour.<\/p>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-What-it-means-for-students\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"What-it-means-for-students\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-What-it-means-for-students\">What it means for students<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"What-it-means-for-students\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>Academic integrity means that a student\u2019s work at Curtin should be completed by that student with integrity. Integrity is to act ethically, honestly and with fairness. We provide students with a range of resources that outline expected standards of behaviour and exemplars of appropriate behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>Our teaching and learning practices support academic integrity within each discipline. Students are required to take the designated academic integrity unit (DAIU) in their first study period, which supports academic integrity competence and appropriate acknowledgement of skills required for the discipline. This complements information learned in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/students\/essentials\/rights\/academic-integrity\/aip\/\">Academic Integrity Program (AIP)<\/a>, completed within two weeks of commencing a course.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/students\/essentials\/higher-degree-by-research\/\">Higher degree by research<\/a>\u00a0students are required to complete disciplinary specific Research Integrity Training.<\/p>\n<p>Curtin\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/students\/essentials\/rights\/\">student charter<\/a>\u00a0and values guide expectations regarding student behaviour and responsibilities. As part of the student charter, students are expected to inform themselves of, and comply with, all relevant laws, statutes, rules and by-laws, the University\u2019s values and ethical behaviours, and policies and procedures relating to their rights as a student. Students must recognise that cheating, plagiarism and fabrication or falsifications of data are not acceptable and must adhere to the proper use of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/copyright\/\">copyright<\/a>\u00a0material.<\/p>\n<p>If a student\u2019s conduct breaches expectations, they may be provided with a warning or their action may be serious enough to warrant investigation of alleged misconduct.<\/p>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-What-it-means-for-staff\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"What-it-means-for-staff\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-What-it-means-for-staff\">What it means for staff<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"What-it-means-for-staff\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>Staff are expected to act as role models for students in learning, teaching and research. This means upholding Curtin values and acting with the principles of honesty and fairness. Staff are expected to promote, uphold and embed academic integrity principles into the curriculum at all levels, as well as respond appropriately to breaches.<\/p>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Academic-integrity-program-(AIP)\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Academic-integrity-program-(AIP)\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Academic-integrity-program-(AIP)\">Academic integrity program (AIP)<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Academic-integrity-program-(AIP)\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>The University takes an educative approach to academic integrity. It provides an Academic Integrity Program (AIP) for both staff and students.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/students\/essentials\/rights\/academic-integrity\/aip\/\">student program<\/a>\u00a0includes an introduction to academic integrity, defines what it is, how to act with integrity while preparing for assignments, how to show academic integrity in their work, how to use and cite sources. It also covers common breaches of academic integrity, how to act with academic integrity when doing group work and ethical reuse of their own work.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/staffportal.curtin.edu.au\/learning-and-teaching\/assessments\/promoting-academic-integrity\/\">staff program<\/a>\u00a0has five modules that look at what academic integrity is, why it matters, how to promote a culture of academic integrity, including policies and processes to help. How to respond to breaches of academic integrity, the implications for teaching, learning and assessment, and assessment design choices and how they can affect academic integrity are also covered.<\/p>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-What-happens-if-there-is-a-breach?\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"What-happens-if-there-is-a-breach?\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-What-happens-if-there-is-a-breach?\">What happens if there is a breach?<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"What-happens-if-there-is-a-breach?\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>If a breach of expected standards of behaviour is suspected there is a defined process to follow. The complete process is articulated in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/about\/governance\/enabling-legislation\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Statute 10 \u2013 Student Discipline and the associated rules.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2022\/03\/Managing-Student-Conduct-Explanatory-Guide-for-Staff-2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Managing student conduct \u2013 Explanatory guide for staff<\/a> [.pdf 1 MB] provide an overview of the process.<\/p>\n<p>Staff, students or any member of the public can report a suspected integrity breach in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dixonwebform.curtin.edu.au\/\">Dixon web form<\/a>. Staff members\u00a0who suspect on reasonable grounds that a student may be guilty of misconduct are required to\u00a0report\u00a0the matter.<\/p>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Support\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Support\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Support\">Support<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Support\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <h2>For students<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/library\/\">Curtin\u00a0library<\/a>\u00a0provides resources and workshops on referencing, copyright, academic writing and study skills. Students managing an allegation of misconduct have access to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/students\/personal-support\/counselling-wellbeing\/wellbeing\/\">student wellbeing advisory service<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/guild.curtin.edu.au\/advice\/\">student assist<\/a>\u00a0for support.<\/p>\n<h2>For staff<\/h2>\n<p>Staff are provided with resources that help:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>develop and embed academic integrity into the curriculum<\/li>\n<li>promote academic integrity competence in the classroom<\/li>\n<li>provide guidance on managing student conduct.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/staffportal.curtin.edu.au\/governance\/discipline-and-investigation\/student-conduct\/\">managing student conduct<\/a>\u00a0page has resources to help you determine whether a breach should be classified as alleged misconduct or a warning for new to Curtin students.
