Council is responsible for the overall governance and effective management of the University.&nbsp; It normally meets seven times each year and meetings are normally held at Curtin Perth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Section 9(1)(c) of the Act provides that the membership of Council shall include <em>&#8220;One person who is a member of the academic staff of the University and who is elected by the academic staff of the University in the manner prescribed by Statute\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This election is being conducted to fill a casual vacancy. The successful candidate will hold office until 31\u202f March\u202f2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Academic staff considering nominating for election are encouraged to read the University\u2019s Corporate Governance Statement before nominating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All members, whether appointed or elected, are required to act at all times in the best interests of the University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The University encourages diversity on its committees and therefore particularly encourages nominations from people from diverse backgrounds.<\/p>\n\n\n<mimas-block \n        block-name=\"accordion\"\n        role=\"complementary\"\n        aria-label=\"Accordion content\"\n        data-segment=\"all\">\n\n                \n\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Staff-members-eligible-for-election\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Staff-members-eligible-for-election\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Staff-members-eligible-for-election\">Staff members eligible for election<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Staff-members-eligible-for-election\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>All academic staff members appointed to continuing or fixed term contracts as academic staff of the University are eligible for election to Council.<\/p>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Staff-members-eligible-to-nominate-a-candidate\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Staff-members-eligible-to-nominate-a-candidate\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Staff-members-eligible-to-nominate-a-candidate\">Staff members eligible to nominate a candidate<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Staff-members-eligible-to-nominate-a-candidate\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>All academic staff members appointed to continuing or fixed term contracts as academic staff of the University may nominate themselves, or another academic staff member, to be a candidate for this election.<\/p>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Nomination\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Nomination\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Nomination\">Nomination<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Nomination\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>Nominations are made using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2026\/04\/Nomination-Form-Academic-Staff-to-Council-2026-Casual-Vacancy-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nomination form<\/a> which must be completed, signed and dated by both the nominee and nominator. The Returning Officer may reject any nomination that does not comply with the Statute.<\/p>\n<p>A candidate who would like their candidature to be supported by a profile must, before close of nominations, give to the Returning Officer a statement that \u2013<\/p>\n<ol style=\"list-style-type: lower-alpha\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">is in the English language and does not exceed 150 words in length;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">is confined to a description of the candidate and the candidate\u2019s skills, qualifications and experience relevant to the Council and does not contain information that could be considered to be false, misleading or defamatory;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">includes the candidate\u2019s full name (in the form in which they have asked for it to appear on the ballot form), contact details (email address is sufficient), and staff identity number;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">may include a recent passport sized photograph of the candidate\u2019s head or head and shoulders.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Nomination-period\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Nomination-period\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Nomination-period\">Nomination period<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Nomination-period\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>The nomination period will commence on<strong> Tuesday, 28 April 2026<\/strong> and close at <strong>2:00pm on Tuesday, 12 May 2026. <\/strong>Nominations will only be accepted during this time.<\/p>\n<p>The Returning Officer will accept a signed, completed Nomination Form as a valid nomination that complies with the requirements set out above.\u00a0 The Nomination Form can be found here:<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2026\/04\/Nomination-Form-Academic-Staff-to-Council-2026-Casual-Vacancy-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nomination form<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nomination forms can be lodged with the returning officer by emailing the completed forms to <a href=\"mailto:Secretariat@curtin.edu.au\">Secretariat@curtin.edu.au<\/a><\/p>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Election-process\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Election-process\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Election-process\">Election process<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Election-process\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">If only one valid nomination is received, that candidate shall be elected;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">If more than one valid nomination is received, an election will be conducted to fill the position;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">The system of voting will be <em>Optional Preferential<\/em>;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">The election will be conducted by Curtin\u2019s electronic voting system <em>Simply Voting<\/em>; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">The candidate that receives the highest number of votes following the distribution of preferences will be declared elected to Council.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Election-timeline\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Election-timeline\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Election-timeline\">Election timeline<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Election-timeline\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>The key dates in relation to the election are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">If an election is required, all academic staff members will be notified by email on <strong>Friday, 15 May 2026.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">An electronic ballot form will be prepared and will incorporate the candidate statements and photographs (where provided).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">An email will be sent from Simply Voting on <strong>Wednesday, 20 May 2026 <\/strong>to those eligible to vote with details on how to access the Simply Voting site.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Those eligible to vote will be able to use this link to vote from receipt on <strong>Wednesday, 20 May 2026 <\/strong>until the close of the voting period.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">The voting period will end at <strong>5:00 pm on Thursday, 4 June 2026<\/strong>.
