        \n                                            <p><p>We are proud that Curtin University has once again been selected to coordinate and deliver the Women in Leadership Journey 6 (WILJ6) in conjunction with the Vietnam Australia Centre (VAC). They were selected from a highly competitive pool and will each be awarded up to $10,000 towards their professional leadership development and work with the Provost on a University-wide strategic project over the next six months.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr Ravani Duggan<\/strong> is an Associate Professor in the Curtin School of Nursing, with a research joint appointment in the Centre for Nursing Research at Sir Charles Gairdner Osborne Park Health Care Group. She is a registered nurse and midwife with 28 years of experience as an educator and researcher, having worked in South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, and Australia. Ravani is an experienced qualitative researcher with previous projects in the areas of nursing and midwifery education, maternal and child health, and workforce. She leads the Mature Age Workforce Research Program, a collaborative initiative between the Curtin School of Nursing and Sir Charles Gairdner Osborne Park Health Care Group. This program explores the experiences of mature-age nurses and midwives employed within the health sector in Western Australia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Provost Fellows project description<\/strong>: Female employment levels in Australia have increased over time with older women remaining employed. The result is that many of these workers in a university setting will experience menopausal transition while holding senior positions within teams or in their field. While the experience of menopausal transition varies, existing evidence indicates its potential to negatively impact workplace engagement. The proposed study aims to explore the menopausal transition experience of staff within Curtin University, using findings to inform targeted wellbeing initiatives to support Curtin as a healthy workplace.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr Justine Leavy<\/strong> is currently an Associate Professor in the Curtin School of Population Health. Justine is the Discipline Lead for Health Promotion and Sexology and a Research Fellow with Collaboration for Evidence, Research and Impact in Public Health. Her practice and research experience includes drowning prevention, physical activity promotion, knowledge translation, and ethics in health promotion. Justine is a member of International Drowning Research Alliance, co-founder on WADER-n the Western Australian Drowning Evaluation and Research Network, Fellow of the Australian Health Promotion Association and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She is a Board member of the Royal Life Saving Society (WA) and a member of the Mass Media Advisory Panel for the US National Physical Activity Plan. Misty guided the conversation through the impacts of discrimination, intersection of gender diversity and neurodiversity, and role of celebration, peer support and queer media in combating discrimination They also reminded us of the importance of reporting discrimination and finished the discussion by asking each panellist what they are celebrating.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"ember589\" class=\"ember-view\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/leigh-andrew-hill-3a41ab132\/\">Leigh Andrew Hill<\/a>, who also introduced the panellists, is a member of Curtin\u2019s Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging Committee and a co-owner and co-editor of <a class=\"app-aware-link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/outinperth\/\" target=\"_self\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">OUTinPerth<\/a>. On the topic of the media influence on LGBTQIA+ discrimination, Leigh asserted \u2018trans and gender diverse people exist and to say that they don\u2019t is bad journalism\u2019 and shared his celebration of 22 years of OUTinPerth.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"ember590\" class=\"ember-view\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/catherine-janssen\/\">Catherine Janssen<\/a>, who serves as Chair on the Board of <a class=\"app-aware-link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/pride-wa-inc\/\" target=\"_self\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">Pride WA<\/a>, emphasised the importance of taking a whole of institution approach to LGBTQIA+ inclusion with executive support, rather than a \u201crainbow tick\u201d approach, and shared that she was celebrating Pride WA expanding their services and this year\u2019s amazing Pride Fest to come.<\/p>\n<p>Lukah Reid shared his story of being a bisexual trans man who experienced homelessness as a result of discrimination, emphasising the importance of acceptance and unconditional love for children who express that they may be queer, and shared his joy at now being eligible to change his birth certificate if he chooses to.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"ember591\" class=\"ember-view\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/zavier-wileman-15188622a\/\">Zavier Wileman<\/a>, a Social Work student and the <a class=\"app-aware-link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/curtinguild\/\" target=\"_self\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">Curtin Student Guild<\/a> Queer Officer, shared their experience of being gender diverse and neurodiverse and how they intersected in terms of their identity. When faced with discrimination they implored us to respond by \u2018leaving a message of love to challenge the hate\u2019 and shared that they were celebrating their family brass band, which began as a safe space for musicians with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Meaghan Holden, who is the Vice Chair of the Board of <a class=\"app-aware-link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/living-proud\/\" target=\"_self\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">Living Proud<\/a>, spoke about the importance of queer people being able to seek peer support services led by their community and celebrated 50 years of Living Proud, as well as the research they undertook with <a id=\"ember592\" class=\"ember-view\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jonathanhallett\/\">Jonathan Hallett<\/a> from the Curtin School of Population Health which was funded by the <a class=\"app-aware-link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/wapha\/\" target=\"_self\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">WA Primary Health Alliance &#8211; WAPHA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Our heartfelt thanks to the panel for their insightful, caring and important conversation, and to all who attended. Take the conversation from today forward by celebrating our queer community and, with love and courage, standing against discrimination.<\/p>\n"},{"id":"intersectional","title":"Statement of Solidarity with the Trans and Gender Diverse Community","content":"<p><em>On 17 April, the Curtin University Gender Research Network, Gender Equity and Inclusion, Curtin Student Guild and Executive Sponsor of Curtin Ally put out the following statement.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We stand in support of the diverse sex, sexuality and gender (DSSG) community, particularly trans people, following the United Kingdom Supreme Court\u2019s decision which rules that trans women are not included as \u2018women\u2019 under the Equality Act 2010 (UK). While this does not apply in Australia, this decision is deeply distressing and now is a moment in which we must stand in solidarity with the global diverse sex, sexuality and gender (DSSG) community in the ongoing fight against discrimination in all forms and advocate for equal rights for all.<\/p>\n<p>Trans women are women, and human rights belong to all people. We all have the right to feel safe, comfortable, included, cared for and respected.<\/p>\n<p>We acknowledge that this is a difficult time for many people. We would like to emphasise the importance of coming together at this time and building solidarities and coalitions of support. The future is intersectional, and creating this future requires a continued commitment to fighting for inclusive gender equity and justice.
