{"id":20541,"date":"2024-02-29T05:37:00","date_gmt":"2024-02-29T05:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/about\/?page_id=20541"},"modified":"2026-03-03T15:14:38","modified_gmt":"2026-03-03T07:14:38","slug":"sage-athena-swan","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/about\/values-vision-strategy\/diversity-equity\/gender-equity-and-inclusion\/sage-athena-swan\/","title":{"rendered":"SAGE Athena Swan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Australian Academy of Science and Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering joined forces in 2015 to implement the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.advance-he.ac.uk\/equality-charters\/athena-swan-charter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Athena Swan Charter<\/a>&nbsp;and associated accreditation program to Australia under the Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE) initiative. Improving the gender diversity of academic staff and students in STEMM is a priority to ensure Australia is competitive with countries which have a greater focus on this area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Curtin University&nbsp;joined the inaugural SAGE pilot of the Australian Athena Swan accreditation program. We received the Athena Swan Bronze Award from SAGE for our efforts to improve gender equity and diversity in our University at a ceremony at Parliament House in Canberra on Wednesday 5 December 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Curtin\u2019s participation in the Australian Athena Swan program and commitment to the Athena Swan Charter demonstrate our willingness to work towards the achievement of the internationally recognised Charter\u2019s aim of advancing gender equity in academia and leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n<mimas-block \n        block-name=\"accordion\"\n        role=\"complementary\"\n        aria-label=\"Accordion content\"\n        data-segment=\"all\">\n\n                \n\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Charter\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Charter\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Charter\">Charter<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Charter\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>SAGE has member institutions across Australia including universities, medical research institutes and publicly-funded research agencies. The Athena SWAN Charter awards bronze, silver and gold level awards to institutions who can demonstrate increasing levels of good practice in recruiting, retaining and promoting women and gender diversity in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM).<\/p>\n<p>The ten principles of the Athena Swan Charter:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Ensure that gender equity, diversity and inclusion work is appropriately resourced, distributed, recognised, and rewarded.<\/li>\n<li>Undertake transparent and rigorous self-assessment processes, analysing institutional structures, systems, and cultures to identify the barriers to attraction, retention and progression for staff and students, and thus to gender equity, diversity and inclusion.<\/li>\n<li>Design initiatives based on institutional data, and national and global evidence of best practice.<\/li>\n<li>Monitor, evaluate, and publicly report on progress made, challenges experienced, and impact achieved, to inform continuous improvement.<\/li>\n<li>Actively incorporate Indigenous knowledges and perspectives to address the specific inequities and injustices experienced by Aboriginal and\/or Torres Strait Islander staff and students.<\/li>\n<li>Consciously consider all genders, recognising that gender is not binary, and that trans and gender diverse people face specific inequities because of their gender identities.<\/li>\n<li>Take an intersectional approach to advancing gender equity, diversity and inclusion, recognising that people of any particular identity are not a homogeneous group.<\/li>\n<li>Engage with those most impacted by inequitable practice to proactively redesign and reshape structures, systems and culture.<\/li>\n<li>Increase the safety and wellbeing of staff and students by proactively and transparently preventing and responding to bullying, harassment, sexual harassment, gender-based violence and discrimination.<\/li>\n<li>Embed change in institutional governance and accountability structures; actively and visibly champion and promote gender equity, diversity and inclusion in our Institutions, the Athena Swan community, and across the sector, and hold ourselves and other senior leaders accountable for driving sustainable transformational change.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Our-commitment\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Our-commitment\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Our-commitment\">Our commitment<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Our-commitment\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>As an Athena SWAN subscriber, Curtin has identified barriers to equality and has implemented initiatives, processes and actions to address them. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>improving gender equity within policies and practices<\/li>\n<li>collecting data and identify gaps and opportunities in gender equity processes<\/li>\n<li>active participation in the SAGE Regional Network (WA) and the SAGE National Network to share best practice.<\/li>\n<li>establishment of Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging governance, and of the Gender Equity and Inclusion Advisory Group (GEIAG) and the Faculty and School Equity and Diversity committees; and<\/li>\n<li>close work with an experienced team of gender equity experts, and support for the Gender Research Network at Curtin to ensure we are thought-leaders in gender research and gender equity practice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Implementing-the-change\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Implementing-the-change\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Implementing-the-change\">Implementing the change<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Implementing-the-change\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>As a Bronze accredited institution, Curtin developed the 2018-2021 Curtin Athena Swan Action Plan.<\/p>\n<p>All areas of the University are involved in implementing the Athena Swan Action Plan and ensuring the milestones and targets are achieved. The plan includes accountabilities for all levels of management across the University.<\/p>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div
