{"id":18038,"date":"2023-08-25T02:10:04","date_gmt":"2023-08-25T02:10:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/about\/?page_id=18038"},"modified":"2026-02-20T10:41:19","modified_gmt":"2026-02-20T02:41:19","slug":"election-of-one-academic-staff-from-each-faculty-to-the-academic-board","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/about\/governance\/secretariat\/elections\/election-of-one-academic-staff-from-each-faculty-to-the-academic-board\/","title":{"rendered":"Election of one Academic Staff from each Faculty to the Academic Board"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Call for nominations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Term of office commencing 1 April 2026 and concluding 31 March 2028.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a call for nominations for the election of one continuing or fixed-term academic staff member from each Faculty to the Academic Board, and for a Deputy of that member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Statute 21 \u2013 Academic Board <\/em>provides for the establishment of an Academic Board.\u00a0 The Academic Board is a committee of the University Council. iIt is responsible to the University Council for helping to ensure that the academic quality, integrity and standards of the University\u2019s operations as an academic institution align with the Higher Education Standards Framework.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Board exercises leadership and has a major role in promoting and communicating academic values, standards, and quality enhancement throughout the University.&nbsp; It has three main functions and responsibilities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Providing advice on academic matters to the Council, Vice-Chancellor and other members of the University senior executive on academic matters,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Approving relevant policies relating to academic matters, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Monitoring the performance, quality and standards of the University\u2019s academic activities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Elected academic members of staff from the faculties are a vital part of the Academic Board.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rule 3.1(1)(k)(iii) of the Academic Board Constitution provides for the membership of the Academic Board to include, \u201c2 other members of the academic staff elected by the continuing or fixed-term academic staff within the Faculty.\u201d&nbsp; A deputy to the members may also be elected under Rule 3.3(4).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This call is made because the terms of office of the current members conclude on 31 March 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n<style>.kadence-column35639_7c62d5-41 > .kt-inside-inner-col,.kadence-column35639_7c62d5-41 > .kt-inside-inner-col:before{border-top-left-radius:0px;border-top-right-radius:0px;border-bottom-right-radius:0px;border-bottom-left-radius:0px;}.kadence-column35639_7c62d5-41 > .kt-inside-inner-col{column-gap:var(--global-kb-gap-sm, 1rem);}.kadence-column35639_7c62d5-41 > .kt-inside-inner-col{flex-direction:column;}.kadence-column35639_7c62d5-41 > .kt-inside-inner-col > .aligncenter{width:100%;}.kadence-column35639_7c62d5-41 > .kt-inside-inner-col:before{opacity:0.3;}.kadence-column35639_7c62d5-41{position:relative;}@media all and (max-width: 1024px){.kadence-column35639_7c62d5-41 > .kt-inside-inner-col{flex-direction:column;justify-content:center;}}@media all and (max-width: 767px){.kadence-column35639_7c62d5-41 > .kt-inside-inner-col{flex-direction:column;justify-content:center;}}<\/style>\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-column kadence-column35639_7c62d5-41\"><div class=\"kt-inside-inner-col\"><mimas-block \n        block-name=\"accordion\"\n        role=\"complementary\"\n        aria-label=\"Accordion content\"\n        data-segment=\"all\">\n\n                \n\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Term-of-office\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Term-of-office\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Term-of-office\">Term of office<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Term-of-office\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>Pursuant to Rule 3.4(2)(c) of the Academic Board Constitution Rules 2019, the term of office for the elected member to the Academic Board, and their deputy, will commence 1 April 2026 and conclude on 31 March 2028.<\/p>\n<p>Individuals considering nominating for election are encouraged to read the University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2026\/02\/Corporate_Governance_Statement-2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Corporate Governance Statement\u00a0<\/a>before nominating. The Statement and several other key governance documents can be found on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/staffportal.curtin.edu.au\/services\/legal-services\/secretariat-resources\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Secretariat\u00a0<\/a>webpage. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/staffportal.curtin.edu.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Meeting-Schedule-2026.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">meeting schedule<\/a>\u00a0sets out details of Academic Board meetings for 2026.<\/p>\n<p>All members, whether appointed or elected, are required to act at all times in the best interests of the University.<\/p>\n<p>The University encourages diversity on its committees and therefore particularly encourages nominations from people from diverse backgrounds.<\/p>\n<p>This call for nominations is made as the terms of office of the academic staff from each faculty may nominate themselves, or another continuing or fixed-term academic staff member from their faculty, to be a candidate for this election.<\/p>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\"  <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Nominations,-supporting-candidate-statements-and-photographs\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>Nominations are to be made using the attached nomination form which must be completed, signed and dated by both the nominee and nominator.<\/p>\n<p>Candidates are strongly encouraged to provide a short statement (not exceeding 150 words) and\/or a passport-sized photograph (in jpeg format) for circulation with the voting material, should an election be required.\u00a0 The Returning Officer reserves the right to edit any statement, or abbreviate any statement exceeding 150 words and to re-size the photograph to ensure consistency of the voting material for each candidate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Completed nomination forms, candidate statements and photographs are to be received by the Secretariat via email <\/strong>(scan and send to the <a href=\"mailto:secretariat@curtin.edu.au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Election-process\">Election process<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Election-process\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <ul>\n<li>Should only one valid nomination for a candidate be received by the closing date for nominations, that candidate will be declared elected.<\/li>\n<li>If more than one valid nomination is received, an election will be conducted to fill the position.<\/li>\n<li>The election will be conducted using Curtin University\u2019s electronic voting system\u00a0<strong>\u2018Simply Voting\u2019<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The system of voting will be Optional Preferential.<\/li>\n<li>The candidate who receives the highest number of votes following the distribution of preferences will be declared elected to the Academic Board.<\/li>\n<li>The candidate who receives the second highest number of votes following the distribution of preferences will be declared elected as the Deputy to the Member.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n        \n                            \n eligible voters within each Faculty will be notified by email on\u00a0<strong>Friday, 20 February 2026.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>An electronic ballot form will be prepared and will incorporate the candidate statements and photographs (where provided).<\/li>\n<li>An email will be sent from Simply Voting on\u00a0<strong>Monday, 23 February 2026<\/strong>\u00a0to those eligible to vote with details on how to access the Simply Voting site.<\/li>\n<li>Those eligible to vote will be able to use this link to vote from receipt on\u00a0<strong>Monday, 23 February 2026<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>until the close of the voting period.<\/li>\n<li>The voting period will end at\u00a0<strong>5.00 pm on Monday, 9 March 2026<\/strong>.
