{"id":15018,"date":"2024-05-14T02:51:02","date_gmt":"2024-05-14T02:51:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/about\/?page_id=15018"},"modified":"2026-01-12T14:05:19","modified_gmt":"2026-01-12T06:05:19","slug":"curtin-pay-review","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/about\/employment-suppliers-contractors\/curtin-pay-review\/","title":{"rendered":"Curtin Pay Review"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In 2023, Curtin University proactively commenced a casual Pay Review to ensure our employees have been, and continue to be, paid correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The review period covers 2 January 2015 \u2013 5 January 2023 for current and former casual employees covered by the:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Curtin University Academic, Professional &amp; General Staff Agreement 2017-2021<\/em>;&nbsp;and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Curtin University Academic, Professional &amp; General Staff Agreement 2012-2016<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to differences in agreement commencement dates, the review period is 27 February 2015 \u2013 5 January 2023 for current and former casual employees covered by the:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Curtin University Early Childhood Centre Enterprise Agreement 2018-2021;<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Curtin University Early Childhood Centre Enterprise Agreement 2014-2017<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Curtin has been in communication with the Fair Work Ombudsman and the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) throughout the review process. We are also working with external advisors to carefully analyse data and calculate any amounts that may be payable to current and former employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The University is in the process of making payments to impacted casual professional and general employees.&nbsp; We have remediated a large portion of impacted current and former employees.&nbsp;There are some challenges contacting a number of former employees and we continue to work through that proactively.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Curtin is progressing its review of payments to casual academic employees, adopting a staged approach to ensure impacted employees can receive payment quickly and efficiently, as each stage is finalised. Curtin will continue to provide updates in the below FAQs and on the Curtin Pay Review webpage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All current employees who are impacted by the Curtin Pay Review will be contacted by the University via their Curtin email address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Former employees will be contacted either by personal email or post. These have occurred due to errors in payroll processing and\/or the inadvertent misapplication of some terms in the relevant enterprise agreements. Some examples include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">incorrect application of overtime rates for work performed outside the Normal Operating Hours or in excess of ordinary hours of work;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">a misapplication of a 10-hour break payment;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">inconsistent application of the allowance payable to employees who work outside the applicable span of ordinary hours under the <em>Higher Education Industry \u2013 General Staff \u2013 Award.<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Curtin does not intend to seek to recover any overpayments that may have occurred.<\/p>\n<p>From 3 November 2025, a new interpretive timesheet was introduced in Employee Kiosk for use by casual professional employees and their managers. The new timesheet module is designed to make it easier to record, review, submit and approve time worked \u2013 helping to ensure timesheets are accurate and payments are processed smoothly and on time.<\/p>\n<p>This rollout is part of Curtin\u2019s ongoing commitment to ensuring all employees are paid accurately and on time, using robust systems with inbuilt safeguards. It\u2019s an important step as we continue to strengthen our pay-related processes, governance and assurance programs across the University.<\/p>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-What-has-the-Review-found-for-casual-academic-employees?\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"What-has-the-Review-found-for-casual-academic-employees?\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-What-has-the-Review-found-for-casual-academic-employees?\">What has the Review found for casual academic employees?<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"What-has-the-Review-found-for-casual-academic-employees?\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>Curtin is undertaking its review of payments to casual academic employees in stages. The reason that Curtin has adopted a staged approach is to ensure that impacted employees are notified of any issues affecting them and remediated for any payment shortfalls, as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<p>The Review has, as part of the first stage, identified payment errors relating to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Payment for teaching and\/or marking conducted for an overseas Curtin or partner campus.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Activities where a casual academic employee held a PhD.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">The use of pay codes in the Medical School prior to their inclusion in the relevant enterprise agreement.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Use of two pay codes in the Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme (ITAS) program.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Misapplication of a pay code in Curtin English and the health and safety representative allowance.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The second stage of the Review further identified unintentional payment issues concerning:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Payment at the repeat delivery rate rather than the initial delivery rate for an initial tutorial or lecture;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Paying the standard rate rather than the higher applicable rate for an activity where a casual academic employee was a Unit Coordinator; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Paying the applicable rate for completion of the casual academic induction program.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Curtin has not finalised its review of payments to casual academic employees and will continue work on further stages of the review. Curtin will provide updates as its review progresses, including on the Curtin Pay Review webpage.<\/p>\n<p>If you are impacted by the casual academic review, you will be notified and remediated accordingly. We recommend that you consult a financial or tax advisor if you require guidance on how the payment may impact you.<\/p>\n<p>Interest on your payment has accrued and will be paid at the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) cash rate in the relevant half of the financial year, plus 4 per cent per annum across each financial year of the Review period.<\/p>\n<p>The applicable employer superannuation contributions will also be paid at the relevant Government Superannuation Guarantee rate into your superannuation fund.<\/p>\n<p>Curtin will also pay interest on your superannuation contributions into your fund. This will generally be at the same rate set out above, but in some circumstances, interest is required to be paid at a higher rate under the superannuation guarantee rules.<\/p>\n<p>Further support on your superannuation contribution is available with UniSuper member service consultants, either in person on campus or by virtual meeting. Your bank may apply international transaction fees to the payment.<\/p>\n<p>Payment of any superannuation contribution (including interest) must be made to a complying Australian superannuation fund. If you no longer have a complying superannuation account, we can contribute to our default employer superfund (UniSuper), and you will be set up with an account.<\/p>\n<p>Alternatively, you can choose to open a complying superannuation account with a different provider and payment will be made to this fund.
