{"id":40822,"date":"2026-08-26T11:42:17","date_gmt":"2026-08-26T03:42:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/about\/?post_type=futures-platform&#038;p=40822"},"modified":"2026-08-26T11:43:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T03:43:08","slug":"upcycled-designer-garments-take-nyoongar-stories-to-new-zealand-fashion-week","status":"publish","type":"futures-platform","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/about\/futures-platform\/upcycled-designer-garments-take-nyoongar-stories-to-new-zealand-fashion-week\/","title":{"rendered":"Upcycled designer garments take Nyoongar stories to New Zealand Fashion Week"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A collection made from donated pre-loved clothing, upcycled through collective artwork and other materials including kangaroo skins, carried the stories of Nyoongar women from Western Australia to New Zealand Fashion Week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The collection featured in Pacific Fusion Runway on Friday 21 August at 8:30 pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>The garments were created by Nyoongar women from two WA organisations: Voice of Hope, a community group connecting Aboriginal women to culture and learning their ancestral ways of healing; and social enterprise Deadly Denim, led by Nyoongar designer Rebecca Barlow, a lecturer at Curtin University.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-uhd\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1005\" height=\"1280\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2026\/08\/IMG_0473-1005x1280.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-40823\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image Credit: <em>NZFW<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>The project is supported by researchers from the Sustainable Communities and Waste (SCaW) Hub and the Curtin School of Design and the Built Environment, who study the environmental, social and economic benefits of textile reuse for Aboriginal communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>\u201cThis is about giving discarded clothing a new life and a new story,\u201d says Ms Barlow. \u201cThe women created something they\u2019re proud of, that will be seen on an international stage.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>Associate Professor Pia Interlandi says the runway show is a starting point for further work in community. \u201cThe show is not the end of the project,\u201d she says. \u201cIt creates momentum for new skills, workshops, and more opportunities to reuse clothing when the group returns home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>SCaW Hub researchers will document the experience with the participants\u2019 consent, including their responses to seeing the collection presented.
